Going back a generation takes us to Thomas Bell and his wife Esther, William’s parents. Thomas was christened on 4th February 1744 at Sutton on Forest. His parents were Henry and Mary Bell. Thomas had two children from a ‘spouseless relationship’. These were Mary, born about 1761 and Richard, born about 1770. Thomas would have been 17 when Mary was born and twenty-six when Richard was born. At the age of 28 he married Esther at Kirkby Overblow. This was on 20th of April 1772. They had eight children : William, chr. 31st August 1773, Thomas, chr. 13tApril 1776, Esther, chr. 22nd June 1778, Joseph, chr. 9th January 1781, Hannah, chr. 23rd February 1783, Elizabeth, chr. 2nd August 1786, another Elizabeth, chr. 26th March 1790, and James, chr. 27th September 1794. All these christenings took place at Sutton on Forest. Thomas was buried at Sutton on Forest on 2nd November, aged 67. The cause of death given was ‘decline’. James, one of his sons, was buried at Sutton on 1st November 1826, at the age of 32. He was described as ‘James Bell of Clifton’. Going back a generation again, Thomas’ father, Henry, was christened in Sutton on Forest on 30th September 1715. His father was George Bell, a labourer. Henry married twice. His first marriage was to Mary Marsden, of the same parish (i.e. Sutton) on 5th July 1741. Henry and Mary had five children: Jane, chr.13th June 1742, Thomas, chr. 4th February 1744, Anne, chr. 9th December 1747, William, chr. 8th February 1750, and Susannah, chr.14th December 1754. About a year later, Mary died, and was buried on 18th November 1755. Henry would be about 40 years old at this time. At the age of 56, he married Elizabeth Elison of St. Mary’s, York. This was on 31st July at Sutton on Forest. We do not know when Henry died. The furthest we can go back with the Bell family is about 1688, when Henry’s father, George, was born in Sutton on Forest. George was married to Ann Clark on 14th April 1713 in the parish of Otley. Henry, our direct ancestor, was their first child. His siblings were Thomas, chr. 23rd February1717, Mary, chr. 26th January 1720, Anne, chr. 11th December 1722, John, chr. 8th November 1724, and George, chr. 8th May 1727. According to the last two of these christening records, the family were living in Huby. |
