John Cox 1912 - 1989
John Cox aka Jack was born in 1912 in York, the son of Plumber John Cox & Sarah Anne Habbishaw, Jack was destined to follow in his fathers footsteps and become a Master Plumber, he was apprenticed by his mother to John Shouksmith (the 3rd Cox to be apprenticed to the firm) for five years although no remuneration appears on his indentures he was required to work a minimum of 44 hours or more per week. Like many of his generation he fought in World War 2, something he rarely spoke about. Before WW2 Jack married Muriel Wilson, having 2 children David (my father) and Marilyn, the family migrated to Sydney, Australia in 1957 where Jack continued to work as a Plumber until his retirement. Jack died in 1989 in Buderim, Queensland.

John Cox 1884 - 1926
John Cox was born in York in 1884, to John Cox and Hope Burt, he to was Apprentice to John Shouksmith Plumbers & Glaziers of York. Prior to being married in 1906 was John living at 10 Railway Court when he received his Freeman of York. In 1908 John married Sarah Anne Habbishaw (1886-1974) daughter of George Habbishaw and Mary Ann Brassey. They had 8 Children, Edith 1908-2000, Hope 1910-1961, John (above), Frederick William 1914-1918 (died of convulsions), triplets Annie 1918-1983, Arthur 1918 (4 days old when he died), Beatrice Alice 1948.

John was with the Royal Engineers serving in France in 1915, he won 3 medals Victory, British Medal and the 15 Star. During his tour of France he was gassed, John died in 1926 being diagnosed with Phistitis, whether this was precipitated by the gassing is unknown. John is buried in York Cemetery.

John Cox 1853 - 1925
John was born to parents Thomas Cox and Mary Powell (1831-1883) daughter of John Powell and Ann Metcalf. In 1861 John was indentured to John Shouksmith for a period of 7 years, for the first 2 years he was to be paid 2 shillings, 3rd year 3 shillings, 4th year 4 shillings etc.. finally in his 7th year 7 shillings per week. He was also to receive as a form of bonus 1 shilling every Shrove Tuesday for the term of his apprenticeship.

Like his son prior to his marriage in 1908 to Hope Burt (1855-1917) daughter of John Burt and Sarah Welch of Dorset, John received his Freeman of York, whilst living at Coppergate.

John and Hope had 10 children, Mary Eliza 1877, Frances 1878, Thomas William 1880-1882, Alice 1882, John (above), William 1886, Harry 1888, Annie 1891, Charles Henry 1896, Arthur 1898-1919 (died in WW1 Belgium).

When John died in 1925 he was buried in York Cemetery, eventually there was to be 2 more family members buried with him Hope his wife, and John (above), and inscription to Arthur is also included on the Memorial which is a cross on a plinth. (York Cemetery records I don't have a photograph).

Thomas Cox 1823 - 1876
Thomas was born to parents John & Elizabeth Steel (1786-1818) daughter of John Steel. Baptism 28 Dec 1823 at Holy Trinity Micklegate which read, Thomas son of John Cox & Elizabeth, baker of Micklegate. John received his Freeman of York in 1844, by 1855 he was running a bakers shop at 1 Blossom Street, Micklegate.

in 1851 at York Registry Office he married Mary Powell (1831-1883), one year later John was born, other siblings included Eliza 1854, Frances Ann 1856, Mary Hannah 1857 (she died a month later), Thomas Frederick 1859, Hannah 1860-1861, Elizabeth 1862, William 1863.

By 1871 Thomas appears to have changed occupations as the census records show him as a Publican, the family had also moved to 12 Fetter Lane, St Mary Bishophill Jnr.

By the time of his death in 1876 Thomas was back to baking and living at Coppergate, he died of Phistitis like his grandson would in 50 years time. He too is buried in York Cemetery in a grave that would later serve to be the final resting place of his mother Elizabeth, his daughter Eliza and his wife (there is no inscription for Mary).
