George was born in Catton circ 1758

His birth parents are identified as:
father: Matthew Wilson mother: Margaret Dixon

He married twice: He was the eldest of seven children, having four brothers and two sisters. He had 13 children, 6 sons and 7 daughters. He was the 4 greats grandfather of Keith Wilson and the 6 greats grandfather of Becky, John, Laura, Thomas, Kim and Gina.

BIOGRAPHICAL TEXT:
George was the son of Matthew Wilson, who lived in the village of Catton in the Parish of Topcliffe near Thirsk in North Yorkshire: we do not know what Matthew did for a living, or where he was born.

George lived at Catton and worked as a tailor for all of his life. In all, he had 13 children. He had 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters, by his first wife, Mary Almgill, before she died of a fever when she was only 40 years old.  Just over one year later, George married Jane Yellow with whom he had a further 3 sons and 4 daughters. There is some confusion about the birth of his last child, Martha. In the Topcliffe Parish Records, Martha’s mother is given as Jane; parents Lancelot and Jane Yanwith. The Parish Records for the Chapelry of Sand Hutton tell us that George Wilson, widower of the Parish of Topcliffe, married Jane Yellow of  the Chapelry of Sand Hutton: the records do not tell us whether Jane was a spinster or a widow. It seems likely that she was a widow who had been married to some one called Yellow. There was a Yellow family and a Yanwith family living in the area, but no trace of the marriage, nor the birth of a Jane Yanwith of the right age can be found. Nevertheless, it seems unlikely that there were two unrelated George Wilsons living in such a small place as Catton, at the same time, so Jane Yanwith and Jane Yellow are probably one and the same.

The 1851 Census shows that Jane, now a widow, is still living in Catton with her youngest daughter, Martha and her family: her birthplace is given as “Sutton”, but no Jane Yanwith or Yellow is given as being christened in Sutton on Forest, or anywhere else on the IGI that might fit the bill.
