BIOGRAPHICAL TEXT:

Matthew was born in Catton in the Parish of Topcliffe near Thirsk. His father spent all of his working life as a tailor in Catton: Matthew did not follow his father’s example and worked as an agricultural labourer.

Matthew married his wife, Sarah, in Haxby, the Parish where she was born; and they lived for most of their married lives, just down the road, in the village of Wigginton.

Nothing is known about Matthew’s daughters and no reference to them has been found in the Parish Registers apart from their christening. Sadly, two of his sons, both called John, died at an early age. His son, James, was buried 22nd March 1863, aged 36, apparently unmarried. As far as we know, only sons George and Thomas married and produced children.
