BIOGRAPHICAL TEXT:

George was the son of an agricultural labourer and was born in the village of Wigginton just to the north of the City of York. Like his father, he worked as an agricultural labourer for all of his working life. His wife was the daughter of an agricultural labourer, Richard Whincup of Kirk Deighton, and Mary Faulkingham of Spofforth.

In 1881, his wife having died some time between 1871 and 1881, George was living with his unmarried youngest son, Alfred, an agricultural labourer, at Sows Farm, Shipton. There were two other family units living at Sows Farm: George’s eldest child, Mary, and her husband, farm labourer Francis Nicholson, with her nephew, Francis Speck, son of her sister, Sarah; and gamekeeper, Matthew Lofthouse (unrelated to George), and his family.

In 1901, George was still living with Alfred, who had by this time married his wife, Sarah, having six sons: James, Henry, Frederick, Herbert, Lewis and Frank. The family had moved to South Milford near Tadcaster where Alfred was working in the brewing industry as a maltster’s labourer.
