William was born in Shipton, York 3 Nov 1855. His birth parents are identified as: He married once. William had four brothers and four sisters. He had nine sons and three daughters. His youngest two children, Dorothy and Nellie, were twins. He was Keith’s great grandfather, and the three greats grandfather of Becky, John, Laura, Thomas, Kim and Gina. BIOGRAPHICAL TEXT: William was born the son of a publican. At the time of his marriage, in October 1881, he was a master butcher living at York, though the 1881 Census shows him to be living with his brother at Shipton near York. The 1897 Trades Directory of the North and East Ridings shows him to be a butcher at 1 Upper Price St and 37 the Shambles, York. The 1901 Census shows that William was a master butcher working from home, still at 1 Upper Price St.: he was assisted by his eldest son, George. Around 1903, William moved from Upper Price St. York to New Parks, Huby. In 1905, he moved to Great Ouseburn, where he went back to butchering. In 1906, the family moved again: this time to Poppleton Rd. York. William worked for a man called Dan Blake, a farmer from Warthill, who had a butcher's shop at 59, Nunnery Lane. The family next moved to 33, Blossom St., a sweetshop. His wife, Elizabeth looked after the shop while William continued butchering at Nunnery Lane. The family moved to Nunnery Lane when Mr. Blake left because of bad health and William bought the business for £100, payable in 4 instalments of £25, on 10 Nov 1906. He eventually moved to White Cross House, Bishopthorpe and, around 1923, started up another business that failed. Between 1923 and 1927, the family lived at Elvington and William took up farming again. After about three years, the family moved to Hollin Hill Farm in Huby. Some of the fields adjoining the main road were sold for building, and the farm, the stock - carthorses, cattle, sheep and farm implements - were sold by auction by Messrs. Tomlinson and Son, on 2 Mar 1932. William built a detached house, "Red House", where he lived until the 1939 war started. He then moved to "The Groves", a house he owned in Lawrence Street. Elizabeth died on 2 May 1940, soon after they moved back to Sandy Lane. He then lived with several of his children before dying in 1941in the Grange, Heslington Lane, York. He is buried in Sutton on Forest churchyard. William Wilson was linked to 16 recorded events during his life. 1. Birth 03/11/1855 2. Baptism 02/12/1855 3. Marriage 18/10/1881 4. Birth 12/09/1882 5.
