Matthew was said to have been born about 1726 in Topcliffe. We do not know who his parents were – there is no record of his having been christened in Topcliffe, but the best guess is that he was born in Thornton Watlass, his father also being called Matthew. He married once. We know nothing about his brothers and sisters, but he had seven children, 5 sons and 2 daughters. He was Keith Wilson’s five greats grandfather and was the seven greats grandfather of Kim, Gina, Becky, John, Laura and Thomas Wilson BIOGRAPHICAL TEXT: Matthew lived for most of his life in the little village of Catton in the Parish of Topcliffe. The Parish record relating to his marriage gives his occupation as “servant” and the record of his death gives his occupation as labourer. At this time, “servant” often meant “farm servant”, so Matthew probably worked for most of his life as an agricultural labourer. Apart from this, we know very little about his life He had a sad life. Apart from his first son, George, all of his sons died prematurely: his second son, Matthew was only one month old when he died; twins, James and William died only 3 days apart at little more than one month of age; and his youngest son, Thomas, died when he was only 23.
